  • Creating a Block Schedule for Homeschool Success

Creating a Block Schedule for Homeschool Success

I am using a “block schedule” in our homeschool this year. Each block focuses on an area of education, and then they get a break.

This is working far better than a “daily rhythm” for us. We are a people of structure. lol I am attaching a printable I made in Canva below that you can download and use.

I write in their daily needs on this. You could type in what you want them to do by uploading this into Canva and then adding text boxes to write in stuff. I just find using a pen goes faster, and I can get more specific without having to log in and type. lol

For the prayers, I’m assigning prayers that they need work on memorizing. (We are Catholic, and we find having memorized prayers helps in times of need. Of course, prayer can also be free style.)

I’ve broken the day into five blocks. They way I have arranged them is: Block One – Handwriting and Religion; Block Two – Math; Block Three – Language Arts; Block Four – Science (m/w), Geography (m/w/f), and History (t/th); Block Five – Health (m), Art (t), Music (w), Social Issues (th), and Finance (f) with a 30 minute quiet reading time at the end of the day.

Block Two and Three are the longest blocks. Math should take about an hour, and the Language Arts can take an hour or more depending on what is going on in their curriculum. If needed, be flexible and break up the longer blocks. Our language arts block covers grammar, reading comprehension, spelling, phonics, etc. Some days there will be more work than others. This is why I am not putting set times on the blocks, rather using it as a checklist to make sure we are covering what needs to be done each day in a set order so they know what to expect. It’s kind of a mix between the more fluid “Waldorf-y” rhythm and a classical school approach. I love the teaching methods of Waldorf, but all three of my children have thrived under a more classical school approach, so I’ve blended the two together in a variety of ways.

  • Printable Daily Devotion Guide for Kids

Printable Daily Devotion Guide for Kids

This year I am creating binders where all three of my kids will have similar information to look through each day. I am using page protectors and will be updating the information weekly/monthly as we retain things.

One of the items I am including is this list of daily devotions to help guide us in our prayer. I found this list online, but the printable version took a ton of ink. Homeschool parents, you can understand my struggle with printers and ink, I’m sure! So, I took the info and copied it in an easier to print format. If you would like the original version, I have linked it here. I’m not trying to steal an idea, I’m just trying to save on ink. lol

Here’s the PDF version I made if you would like to print it. Happy homeschooling!
